Unhappy voters

Editor's note: The Democrat found this editorial interesting, given columnist Steve Flowers' view on some of the state's more popular Republicans reproduced at right.

Republicans should be awfully glad that elections don't take place this year because if they can't take Alabama, they can't win.

And at this moment, Republican stock is low in Dixie. A new survey finds that a majority of Alabamians feel President Bush is doing only a fair or poor job. When it comes to Iraq, even more Alabamians think his handling of the war is poor or only fair.

The Press-Register of Mobile and the University of South Alabama conducted the poll.

President Bush polled nearly two-thirds of the presidential votes cast in Alabama in 2004. His poor overall rating doesn't necessarily mean Alabama wouldn't go Republican again next year, but it does mean the state has a lot of unhappy people, which never bodes well for incumbents.

Unhappy voters usually vote for change.
