Will Stern, NBA issue refund checks
Ross Wood Sports Editor

I have to wonder if NBA president David Stern and league officials will be mailing any refund checks to current owners and players following the recent allegation that one of their longtime referees bet on games, including some that he was working.

The reason I wonder is because of the past several seasons people like Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban as well as players like Rasheed Wallace and Tim Duncan have been fined incredible amounts based on comments that the officials were incompetent.

Cuban alone has paid out several millions in fines and now, if it is proven that official Tim Dohgnay did bet on games where his calls could determine the outcome then I have to think that money should go back to the ones who have been fined.

In fact maybe they, along with other players, should be given something for their troubles.

I agree that David Stern, in the past, did several things to help resurrect a sport that had fallen behind with the majority of the fans, but now it will be interesting to see what happens. Alot of people, mainly fans, are going to be watching and whether they remain loyal could hang in the balance.

And then if that could happen in professional basketball, does that mean that other professional sports are immune from the same thing happening?

What about college games or even God-forbid, high school games? The faith of the players and fans are hanging in the balance.

I know every fan, in every sport, has always made statements about officiating when a call goes against their favorite team, but I know when the statements are made, we just have to hope it is just someone having sourgrapes and not someone actually dictating the outcome of a game.

Something to think about for certain.

That's all folks......
