Local teams ranked in polls

The annual Alabama Sports Writers Association pre-season high school ranking were released recently and this area's teams showed the same strength that carried them to a pair of state titles and one runner-up last year.

Defending state champion Leroy in Class 2A and Sweet Water in Class 1A were voted number one in the poll.

Both squads recieved 23 first place votes.

The Thomasville Tigers in 4A start the season as the second ranked team. They did poll two first place votes following their 28-27 loss to Guntersville in the finals last year. Guntersville is the top ranked team in that class.

The next highest ranked team in the area is the Gators of Clarke Prep School at number six in the AISA.

The Gators moved up to Class AAA last season and look to return to the playoffs again this season.

The Clarke County High School Bulldogs start the season as the ninth ranked team in Class 3A.

Other area schools ranked are Linden at number eight and McIntosh at number nine in Class 1A. The Demons return alot from last year and have a new coach in Larry Boykin. Linden who has went 17-0 in 7- on-7 this summer is coached by former Sweet Water defensive coordinator Andro Williams.

In an ironic twist to perennial powers failed to make the top 10 in their respective classes.

T.R. Miller, in 4A, was unranked for the first time in over a decade.

Southern Choctaw was not in the Class 2A rankings for the first time in several years as well.
