Jury decides Scyrene land dispute last week

      A land dispute was settled by a Clarke County Circuit Court jury last week with jurors ruling in favor of a woman who claimed the 14-plus acres had been in her family since 1913. Jurors were out only 29 minutes before returning a verdict for Kathy Moore Thursday. The trial had started Tuesday.

Stephens no fan of 'No Child Left Behind' law

      Gerald Stephens, superintendent of the Clarke County School System, again criticized the federal "No Child Left Behind" act of 2001 after Jackson Intermediate School and Gillmore Elementary School were recently placed on "School Improvement, Year Two" status.

County to work with Corps on Old Lock One Park

      The Clarke County Commission voted Tuesday to partner with the U.S. Corps of Engineers to improve the park facilities at Lock One in the Salipta community. The county will maintain a two-mile stretch of water line, which runs from the last house on the Old Lock One Road to the gates of the park.

Drug arrest made in Grove Hill fast food parking lot Saturday
      Local and county lawmen arrested a man in the parking lot of Bertile's Fast Food restaurant in Grove Hill on drug charges Saturday morning. Deputy Rob Bost pulled Deon Dickinson over for a DUI investigation. Bost reported that when he first spoke with Dickinson, he seemed nervous.

      Rev. Kenneth Thomas, who works with the Clarke County Department of Utilities, killed this 4-foot, 9- inch rattlesnake last week. The snake has 12 rattles and a button. He killed it mid-morning on the Asbury Road.
