Industry looks at Coffeeville Mayor Faye Cotten told the Coffeeville Town Council during last week's meeting that a representative from an unnamed industry had been in town looking for a site along the river to locate. As copies of Coffeeville's strategic plan were distributed to council members she said, "It's a possibility something is coming to Coffeeville. Cross your fingers. Timothy (Hodge) has shown them some places. We are talking to the landowners and trying to see if we can get an option on the land." Salary raises A discussion was held on the possibility of raising the salaries of the town council members and the mayor. Salary increases must be adopted six months before the next election. "If we raise the salaries I think we need to make it so that if you miss a meeting, you don't get paid for that meeting," Mayor Cotten suggested. Council members agreed with Cotten and then postponed further discussion of the matter until the next meeting. Council member Pearlie Bell added that Cotten's salary should be increased because she was being paid for a part-time position but was working fulltime. Other business Bell requested that Mayor Cotten be reimbursed for her travel expenses from a recent trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the El Camino East-West Corridor Commission's meeting. Cotten responded that she appreciated the gesture, but the town had other financial obligations that should be met before she was reimbursed. Tina May will attend a court clerk conference Sept. 20-22 in Orange Beach. The council voted in favor of donating $100 to the Clarke County Citizens Against Litter committee. Bell will attend a Local Update Census Address workshop in Camden Oct. 3. Mayor Cotten reported the Coffeeville Police Department had received a $1,000 grant to pay for traffic overtime.
Council members Sammy Shields and Terre Hudson were not present.
