A pretty spot
With the Satilpa Creek bridge being closed and no traffic on Highway 69, it was a good time to admire the beauty of the creek and snap a few photographs Monday afternoon. "Indian Place Names in Alabama" by Dr. William A. Read, published in 1937, says Satilpa is a "difficult name" that stems from either "isi," for deer, or "isito" for pumpkin, both Choctaw Indian words. Perhaps the source is "isito" plus "ilhpa," or "provisions," Reed wrote. The nearby community of Salitpa was supposed to be named for the creek but the Post Office department reversed the "l" and the "t" in the creek name, resulting in Salitpa. As a result, Salitpa and Satilpa confuse people to this day!
