Don't go fishing with me!
Memories & Recipes
Cindy Garrick

As hot as it has been, you need to plan your recreational activities around water. I couldn't help but think about a time when my brother, Pete, took me fishing in his boat. I kept letting the fish get away. Pete said it was because I was not setting the hook hard enough.

He was starting to get a little frustrated with me so he decided to put a treble hook on my fishing line; that would give me more to work with to catch the fish. I was determined to show him I could catch something, so I set my jaw and cast that line as hard as I could. But it didn't come back over my arm like it was supposed to so I pulled it really hard. It seemed to be stuck on something and I hadn't even reached the water yet.

I was getting ready to pull it again when I felt something pulling the pole and me backwards. It was Pete, I had hooked his two lips together with one of the three hooks. He couldn't even say anything. He had to get up and pull the pole out of my hands to get my attention. He had to go to the emergency room to have the hooks removed. He's never taken me fishing since.

I did, however, go fishing with my husband and son once. I say once because that was the last time they took me, too. I hooked my son on the back of his head with a single hook.

Dean heard these stories at a family get together a few months back and he has since sold his bass boat. He decided we would fish out of a pond. Me on one end and him on the opposite end facing me!

Well, in case I catch a real fish this time, I've stashed some good recipes!

Curry Baked Fish

1/3 c mayonnaise
3/4 tsp Creole mustard
3/4 tsp lemon juice
3/4 tsp hot sauce
3/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp curry powder
4 bass fillets
2 1/2 dozen round buttery
crackers, crushed

Combine all spices and sauces; brush tops of fillets. Dredge both sides of fillets in cracker crumbs. Place seasoned side up, in lightly greased 13X9 baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake 400 degrees for 20 minutes then serve immediately.

Easy Grilled Fish with Confetti Pepper Relish

1 1/2 lbs fish fillets
Italian salad dressing
cooking spray
Combine fish and dressing in
shallow dish; cover and marinade
about one hour in refrigerator.
Remove fish from marinade,
reserving marinade. Place in fish
basket coated with cooking spray.
Place on grill and close grill.
Grill over medium coals until fish
flakes with fork, turning once.
Brush with marinade. Top with
confetti pepper relish.

Confetti Pepper Relish

2 each sweet red peppers,
green bell peppers, seeded and
chopped.
1 large onion, peeled
and chopped.
1 jalepeno pepper, seeded
and chopped.
1/2 c each, white vinegar
and sugar
1/4 tsp salt

Combine red and green peppers, onion, and jalepeno in a Dutch oven. Add boiling water to cover. Let stand five minutes. Combine vinegar, sugar and salt, stirring well; pour over pepper mixture. Bring to boil over medium fire and boil five minutes, stirring occasionally. Chill and serve with fish.
