Thomasville Board of Ed holds first budget hearing The Thomasville City Board of Education held its first of two public hearings on the fiscal 2008 budget Aug. 16 in the Thomasville High School Library. Chief Financial Officer Linda V. McGhee gave a Power Point presentation for the board members. The city school system included approximately 1,586.60 students after the first 40 days of the 2006-2007 school year. The projection is 1,574 students for 2007-2008. There will be 191 employees in the system, she said. The school system is expected to receive $8,479,033 in federal funding, and $389,730 in local funding (10 Mills) to participate in the state "foundation" program, for the 2007-2008 school year. The Thomasville system expects to receive approximately $1,295,000.00 from all 15-andone half mills and $220,000 from sales tax, McGhee said. The budget had been developed including property taxes from the Boise Cascade paper mill. Boise continues to contest the assessment of portions of the mill. If the dispute over taxes is not resolved, the Thomasville system could lose $600,000 over a two-year period, she said. The second and final budget hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 6. There will also be a regular board meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20. In other action from the Thursday meeting, the board approved a $265,000 lease/purchase agreement with BancorpSouth Bank for four new school buses. • The following personnel moves were made: Rhonda Harris was hired as a third grade teacher at Thomasville Elementary School, pending background check results. William Lance Ingram and Adam Elliott were changed from nine-month teachers to 10-month teacher-coaches. Rita Kay Larrimore was changed from a part-time Coordinated Studies teacher to a fulltime Coordinated Studies Teacher/Multi-media Communications Teacher at Thomasville High School. • The board approved a contract for services of a parent to transport a student to and from school at a rate of $.485-permile; a contract with Education Station and Little Blessings, both of Thomasville, for preschool services at the rate of $75-per-week per student; a contract with Southwest Alabama Medical Center of Thomasville for physical therapy services at $65-per-hour; a contract with MidSouth Psychiatric Therapy of Thomasville for psychiatric therapy at $120- per hour; a contract with Therapy Services of Montgomery for occupational therapy at $90-per-student and $.35-per-mile.
