"Perdue Hill, where the district congressional convention is to meet, is a thrifty, hospitable village, two miles east of Claiborne Landing on the Alabama River, in the good old historic county of Monroe. Persons coming down the Alabama River to the convention will take the steamer Mary Elizabeth, which leaves Selma at 12 o'clock Monday, arriving at Claiborne Tuesday afternoon. Passengers coming up said river will take the Lotus, leaving Mobile Tuesday afternoon, and arriving at Claiborne Wednesday afternoon, in time for the convention which is appointed to meet at 7 o'clock p.m."

An effort to carve a new county out of north Clarke , south Marengo and west Wilcox counties was in the news. An item copies from the Linden Reporter newspaper said, "We learn that a petition was circulated at Shiloh on election day favoring the new county. It did not receive a single signature...So it seems Marengo is against the new county."

A writer from Choctaw Corner told the Democrat of a new county meeting held at Airmount where three people spoke for the new county. "The committee on boundary lines want to make a change by running three miles deeper into Clarke and three miless less in Marengo. They claim that this would give them more help from Clarke and less opposition from Marengo."

Correspondent "Pineywoods" wrote, "I will wager my old hat that these fellows who are making themselves so conspicuous in the new county movement, will be candidates at the first election that is held in the new county. Let that part of Wilcox lying west of the Alabama River and south of Beaver Creek, be attached to Clarke and that above to Marengo, and they will have court-houses at accessible distances and no water to hinder."
