Autumn Calvert
Though Thomasville is where I spent my childhood and teenage years, Fulton, Alabama is the place I would consider home. My family has owned a piece of property there for generations, and, we had an untold number of reunions and gatherings in the old home place.

When I begin to ponder about the place where the air smells familiar and the road could be navigated with eyes closed, Fulton comes drifting into my heart filling it with a cozy goodness.

My father recently had a surgery in which he was in need of assistance. Among my chores during this healing time, retrieving the mail from the post office was on the list.

The first day of completing tasks started with a breakfast of biscuits and honey. After this, I checked my father's condition, found the car keys, and headed off to the Fulton Post Office. Driving to town was littered with memories. All the homes I remembered from my childhood flashed past as I made my way to the center of town. In my mind, I knew where this postal building was located. However, I soon found out my assumptions proved to be incorrect.

The first building I thought would be the post office turned out to be a bank. The second was an office building. Concerned, I weighed my options. Out of nine total buildings in Fulton, Alabama, I could not imagine where this post office was! So, out of shear determination and will, I walked in to the office building and asked the secretary where the post office was located. Of course, it was sitting exactly where I thought it wasn't: - across from the gas station.

Most folks would never admit to being lost in Fulton, Alabama. I, on the other hand, learned a great lesson from this experience - though you may think you know where you are going, you better ask directions just in case. Life has a way of turning you around to make you dizzy and frustrated because things just do not seem to be working out the way you thought they should.

We must always remember that though we think we know the way, we should always ask God for directions. Otherwise, we may be telling a story on how silly we were to assume we knew the answer.

Autumn Mott Calvert grew up in Thomasville- and Fulton apparently. Today she lives in the Huntsville area.
