John Harlan Becton, 83, of Grove Hill died Aug. 19, 2007

at his residence.

He was born Dec. 29, 1923. He was a native of Millry.

He graduated from the Alabama Polytechnic

Institute,

Auburn University.

He was a member

of Grove Hill Baptist Church.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was a retired banker. He moved to Grove Hill in 1965 to work for the First Bank of Grove Hill. He retired in 1989 from the successor bank, First Bank and Trust as president and chief executive officer.

He was a founding board member of Grove Hill Academy, now Clarke Preparatory School, founding chairman of the Clarke County Industrial Development Board, past president of the Grove Hill Chamber of Commerce, founded the Grove Hill Dixie Boys Baseball League, founding president of the Grove Hill Lions Club, past chairman of deacons of the Grove Hill Baptist Church, past chairman of the Alabama Independent Bankers Association, past chairman of the Clarke-Washington Auburn Club. He was elected to the Millry High School Hall of Fame in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Madge Taylor Becton, Grove Hill; one son, Dana Becton, Grove Hill; two daughters, Harla (Ray) Barnes, Grove Hill; Jadda Becton, Millry; one sister, Jackie (Bill) Aydelette, Mobile; eight grandchildren, Tony (Julie) Brunson, Daphne, Robyn (Tommy) Blaylock, Taylor Becton, Celina Becton, all of Grove Hill, Daley (Jerry Harmon) Strickland, Thomasville, Brendan Becton, Auburn, Darren (Tracie) Barnes, Washington, D.C., Tony (Dawn) Barnes, Gordo; eight great-grandchildren, Marlye Brunson, Abbye Brunson both of Daphne, Trace Strickland, Thomasville, Mim Blaylock, Mollie Blaylock both of Grove Hill, Analeigh Barnes, Dylan Barnes, Cade Barnes, all of Washington, D.C.

The service was Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Grove Hill Baptist Church. Burial was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill. Lathan Funeral Home of Grove Hill directed.

Donations can be made to the Grove Hill Baptist Church or the Clarke Prep Baseball Fund.
