      It is being reported that House Speaker Seth Hammett will likely be a candidate for governor in 2010. Seth says he will make a decision in the summer of 2008. The Speaker, a native of Andalusia, has been in the House of Representatives for 28 years and is serving his third term as speaker.

      J. S. Cleiland, seated at right, was elected sheriff in 1934 and took office in January 1935. The incumbent, Claude Waite, did not seek re-election and Sid McVay and Euless Moore ran for the office. Ironically, all three men were related to the Waites, either by blood or by marriage.
