Area citizens appointed to Tombigbee Action Commission Eleven area people have been appointed by Gov. Bob Riley to lead Region 6 of a new statewide initiative to improve the quality of life in rural Alabama. The Alabama Rural Action Commission was created by Riley in May and is comprised of eight regional action commissions encompassing all 67 Alabama counties. The Tombigbee Region consists of Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Dallas, Marengo, Monroe, Perry, Sumter, Washington, and Wilcox counties. The rural commission is modeled after the Black Belt Action Commission, which was created by Riley in 2004 to improve living standards in 12 Black Belt counties. BBAC now has more than 800 volunteers working together to improve health, education, and living standards in the Black Belt. "I look forward to implementing the model of the Black Belt Action Commission in every part of our state," said Riley. "We have an outstanding group of community leaders in place who are building the partnerships needed to bring tangible results to rural Alabama. This is an opportunity for any interested citizen to volunteer and to make a difference in their community." Former state Sen. Gerald Dial serves as the executive director of Alabama Rural Action Commission. In its first phase ARAC is focusing on economic development, workforce development, health, and education. ARAC plan leaves autonomy with the regional leadership to create more committees as deemed necessary to focus on local issues.
