Suppliers Conference Sept. 14 in Thomasville The third annual Rural National Supplier Conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 at Alabama Southern Community College in Thomasville. The event is sponsored by Thomasville Development and Planning and Boeing and brings together some of the leading industries in aviation, aerospace and defense, information technology, systems integration and capital management. Contractors and sub-contractors from Clarke County and Southwest Alabama can network with executives from these large national and international corporations. In addition, area students have the opportunity to meet industry professionals. Patrick J. Finneran Jr., president of Boeing's Support Systems, will be the keynote speaker at 9:25 a.m. U.S. Representative Artur Davis (Seventh Congressional District) is also expected to attend. The National Small Business of the Year (actually a Thomasville business) and the National Minority Owned Small Business of the Year (also an Alabama business) will be recognized. Officials from the U.S. Small Business Administration will be on site in Thomasville. Marketing partners are the Alabama Small Business Development Consortium and the United Indian Development Association. The conference was conceived some four years ago when Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day was participating in the Leadership Alabama program. He talked with executives from Huntsville, which he described as "one of the cutting edge communities." He convinced those executives to bridge the disparity between urban and rural Alabama by networking with officials in southwest Alabama. "We are grateful for our partnership with the Huntsville Business Community including the Marshall Prime Contractor Supplier Council," Mayor Day said. "Without its collaboration, our conference would not be possible." This year, the council will conduct back-to-back presentations at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., followed by question and answer periods. A state, local and federal resource room will also be available. Twenty exhibitors are expected including ATK Thiokol (Edina, Minnesota), Aviation and Missile Command - Redstone Arsenal (Alabama), Boeing (Chicago, Ill.), Computer Sciences Corporation (El Segundo, Ca.), Chickasaw Nation Industries (Ada, Okla.), All Points Logistics (Huntsville, Ala.), Jacobs Engineering (Pasadena, Ca.), NASA, Northrop-Grumman (Los Angeles, Ca.), Pratt-Whitney Rocketdyne (East Hartford, CT), Raytheon (Waltham, MA), SAIC (San Diego, Ca.), Aetos Systems (Huntsville, Ala.), BAE Systems (Rockville, Maryland), Muskogee Metal Works (Atmore, Ala.), The Hancock Group (Altoona, Pa.), and UIDA Business Services (Marietta, Ga). Booths and local resource rooms will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "If a business wants one-on-one time with a procurement officer, our conference provides that opportunity," said Debra M. Fox, director of Thomasville's Development and Planning Department.
