Alcohol permit review board put in place in Thomasville The Thomasville City Council appointed the city's alcohol permit review board at Monday night's meeting. According to the city's alcohol control ordinance, the review board consists of the city clerk, police chief, building inspector, fire chief and three citizens appointed by the mayor and council. Arengia Knight and Alex Taylor were appointed by the council and Rev. Phil Craddock was appointed by the mayor. A 5-1 vote ensued with council member Charles Allen voting no and Mayor Sheldon Day voting yes. Earlier in the council work session, Allen said he would continue to oppose "every phase" of legalized alcohol sales in Thomasville. Day said about 16 businesses have already filed a pre-application form with the local ABC office. During that first step in the process, the state reviews and performs a criminal background check on the applicant. "They're all the chain stores and Wal-Mart and places of that nature," Day said. Once the applicant is approved at that step, the application will be forwarded to the city clerk who will present the applications to the alcohol permit review committee. Recommendations from the review committee will then be sent to the council for final approval. Day said he expects meetings of the permit review committee will be advertised in the newspaper along with a list of the applicants. Day also said the council would likely take two meetings, with hearing recommendations from the committee at one meeting and voting to approve an application or not at a following meeting. There is no word yet whether or not an ABC store will be located in Thomasville. The council voted to reject bids on a new trackhoe, deciding instead to replace the undercarriage of the current city trackhoe at a cost estimated at about $10,000 rather than the approximately $100,000 cost of a new trackhoe. City attorney Edmon McKinley reported that the city will close on a property sale in the industrial park to Ron Criswell for $15,300. Day spoke at length about the third annual rural supplier conference to be held Friday, Sept. 14 at the Thomasville Campus of Alabama Southern Community College. Boeing will be the primary sponsor of the event this year and the conference will feature the recognition of Thomasville Lumber for winning the Small Business Administration's small business of the year award for Alabama and the recognition of Atmore's Muskogee Metalworks for being selected as the Atlanta regional minority manufacturer of the year Day also reported that a number of site selection companies have contacted officials in Thomasville and that Sonic now has an option on property in Thomasville. The city was approved for a $20,000 neighborhood works grant that will likely be used in the MLK area and the city plans to apply for another ICE-T grant to use in the area as well. The same grants were used in the redevelopment of downtown Thomasville. The city is still waiting for revisions to the plans for fire station #2 after bids came in over budget.
Chris Owes was appointed to the industrial development board to serve out the remainder of the term previously served by Robert Clarke until his death earlier this year.
