State posts 3.7 percent July unemployment rate
"The latest unemployment rate is the highest so far in 2007," says Phyllis Kennedy, Alabama Department of Industrial Relations director. "The 3.7 percent figure represents 81,498 unemployed persons, compared to 77,657 in June, and 79,123 in July 2006." The latest comparable national unemployment rate for July is 4.6 percent, a small increase from 4.5 percent in June. The national unemployment rate in July 2006 was 4.8 percent. The lowest county rates for July are: Shelby (2.6 percent), Baldwin (2.9 percent), Madison, Blount and Autauga (3.1 percent), Elmore, Houston and Cullman (3.3 percent) and Chilton, Tuscaloosa, Limestone and Marshall (3.4 percent). The highest county rates for July are: Bullock (10.5 percent), Wilcox (9.9 percent), Perry (9.6 percent), Dallas (9.7 percent), and Lowndes (8.7 percent).
Over the year, there was a net gain of 29,800 jobs in wage and salary employment. The majority of the annual growth occurred in trade, transportation and utilities (+7,700); followed by professional and business services (+7,500); leisure and hospitality (+6,700); educational and health services (+4,000); government (+4,000); and construction (+3,200). The majority of employment losses occurred in manufacturing (-3,700).
