Gonzales gone One of the worst U.S. attorneys general ever resigned Monday. President Bush was the only person to mourn Alberto Gonzales' departure, another sign that he is out of touch with reality and out of touch with the American people. Gonzales, a former White House counsel, saw his honesty and competence questioned by Republicans and Democrats alike in the U.S. Congress. He never successfully defended himself. Probably because he couldn't. Gonzales pushed for the right to trample U.S. citizens' rights through warrantless wiretaps. When U.S. prosecutors were fired around the nation he testified before Congress but it was obvious that he wasn't being truthful. Even some of Bush's strongest GOP allies were irked by his actions. It wasn't so much about the prosecutors but about honesty, ethics and character. When a staunch Republican like Alabama's U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions isn't complimentary, you know something must be wrong.
Sessions called Gonzales a "patriotic American" but said he "may have lacked the necessary experience to be an effective leader of the more than 90,000 Department of Justice employees."
