Eagles suffer tough defeat at Cottage Hill in season opener

Jackson Academy ventured to Mobile Friday night to take on AAA Cottage Hill in the season opening game for both squads.

The Eagles were clearly outmatched heading into the contest but were able to get the young team some valuable game time experience heading into AA play this Friday.

"We responded well this week at practice," Garrett said of his teams' morale following the 61-0 loss to Cottage Hill.

"They are positive and upbeat. We all know we could have played and coached better but they aren't down. They all wanted to be here Sunday afternoon to run and lift. That was not my choice, it was their idea," he added.

The Eagles were held to just 62 total yards on offense but had several players with big nights. JA quarterback Logan Barnes was 6- 12 for 62 yards in the game while tight end Drew Jones hauled in four receptions for a team leading 64-yards.

Wilcox Academy travels to Parham Stadium Friday night in a game where both the Eagles and Wildcats are looking for their first win of the season. Wilcox lost to AAA Monroe 40-12 Friday night.

"Wilcox lost to Monroe but they have a good quarterback in Jason Ray. They have an outstanding lineman in Chris Stone. He will play at the next level. It will be a big challenge for us. Both teams are hungry for a win. Neither team has a whole lot of depth so it should come down to which team wants it the most. They are AA so we should be evenly matched," Garrett said.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
