Pictures From The Past
 | | Ray Harrell of Grove Hill said this old photo published a few weeks ago in The Democrat was misidentified. It is of Harrell, his brothers and his father. From left are James Harrell, Bernard Harrell (the father), Charles Harrell and Ray. The photo was made in downtown Jackson during the 1940s. Bernard Harrell, 98, is still living but in a nursing home. He was 35-years-old when he was drafted in 1944. When the draft officials learned his age, they offered him a deferment but he wouldn't take it and said he could serve just as well as anyone, Ray Harrell explained. He served in the Navy but remained stateside for the rest of the war. This photo, submitted by Walter Davis, was likely made by Locke Bolen. Harrell worked for Bolen during the 1930s and '40s, operating Bolen's theaters in Jackson and Thomasville. Ray Harrell laughed and said he got to see a lot of good movies free during his young years. |

 | | Willie Grace Fendley called in to identify one of the 1935 lawmen pictured in last week's paper. The man standing at right is Sam Finch, a deputy to Sheriff J. S. Cleiland, seated at right. Mrs. Fendley said Finch was a cousin and lived with her family when he was a deputy. Cleiland and the other man standing, Horrie Faile, have already been identified. Can anyone identify the man seated at left? He may have been the jailer. |
