From Our Files Elizabeth Ann Wilkinson, "a petite brunette" of Jackson was elected Clarke County Maid of Cotton . Betty Plummer, "a pretty blonde" of Grove Hill was named alternate. Other contestants included Peggy Barrow, Kaki Gillmore, Nancy Coleman, Mittie Milstead, Jean Harrison, Annie Laurie Campbell and Barbara Fendley. Gross S. Turner of West Bend was elected president of the Clarke County Farm Bureau. He succeeded Archie Lee Counselman who asked to be relieved after serving two years. Coffeeville merchants agreed to new closing hours. Stores will close at 6:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings; at 8 p.m. on Fridays and at 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Agreeing to the plan were S. E. Roberts and Co., Emory McNider's, Charles H. Roberts' Hardware, George Woodham's Store, Oscar Deas' Barber Shop, F. G. Hicks' Barber Shop, Earl G. Bumpers' Coffeeville Cleaners and Chester Deas' Barber Shop. Lt. Thomas J. Tarleton of Thomasville was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for "meritorious service in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in Korea during the period 2 November 1952 to 27 July 1953. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jake Tarleton.
