JA fights hard but loses to Wilcox

Jackson Academy fell to Wilcox Academy 40-13 Friday night in Jackson. The Eagles had a huge night from senior David Hughston who had 17 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown, tallied 11-tackles on defense and returned a kick-off 75 yards for another touchdown.

"We played close in the first half. There were a lot of opportunities to recover fumbles that we missed out on. For a quarter and a half it was close. From about the middle of the second quarter and on they hit a few big plays to pull away," JA Coach Mike Garrett said.

The Eagles actually pulled to within 14-6 at the 4:46 mark in the first quarter when Hughston returned a kickoff 75 yards to pay dirt. Max Harrell's point after was no good but the Eagles had made it a ballgame.

Wilcox answered the score and tacked on a few more in the first half to take a 34-6 lead into the half.

Hughston added a 2-yard touchdown run in the second half to round out the Eagle scoring. Harrell's point after was good.

"We played hard. I can't fault the effort but we need to coach better, tackle better and run and catch better," Garrett added.

Eagle quarterback Logan Barnes completed 10-31 passes for 197 yards. Trent Slayton had three receptions for 89 yards and picked up a fumble recovery on defense. Harrell added five tackles for the Eagle D.

JA (0-2) hosts stud running back Barry Meeks and the Patrician Academy Saints (1- 1) Friday night.

"We need to have a good week of practice. I think we improved from week one to week two. If not, I would not be satisfied," Garrett said.

Game time is 7 p.m.
