RECONSTRUCTING HISTORY
The cabin, the home of pioneer settlers Josiah and Lucy Martin Mathews, originally stood on the south side of Grove Hill. The double pen home had deteroriated greatly when the Clarke County Historical Society assumed ownership and moved it to the museum grounds. Lou Como of Brewton was hired to repair the cabin and has made tremendous headway in just four months. A tin roof has been added and porch roofs remain to be added as well as some interior work and chimneys have to be constructed. All of this has been done for a little over $49,000, including $1,500 for the purchase of the cabin and $10,000 for relocating it. The Thomas L. Turner Charitable Trust contributed $10,000 toward the project and many Mathews descendants gave money too. All total, $42,980 in donations have been received. That leaves a deficit of $6,156. The Historical Society has secured a loan of $10,000 to cover the deficit but donations are needed to help repay it.
Contributions made to the Clarke County Historical Society can be earmarked for the cabin and are tax deductible.
