Our Opinions Tuesday, Sept. 11 marked the sixth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day. Perhaps even worse, a nation lost its feelings of security within its own borders. Memorial ceremonies were held across the country Tuesday and flags were unfurled and many flown at half mast to honor those who died needlessly six years ago. Extraordinary measures have been taken since 9/11 to protect our nation. Some have been justified. Ironically, in our zeal to protect our nation, many of our freedoms have been limited. Some of our responses, like declaring war on Iraq, turned out to be mistakes. Are we safer today than we were six years ago? There have been no further attacks on American soil so in that rspect we are safer. But we are still a jittery citizenry, constantly looking over our shoulders for some sinister boogeyman. Does that mean Osama achieved his intent?
The pre-9/11 security we enjoyed for 200 years may never fully return but we must constantly strive for it.
