Bulldogs post easy easy Homecoming win over Calhoun
It was also a key region win for CCHS. The first team offense scored every time they touched the ball in the first half and they also got scoring help from the defense and special teams as well. The longest drive of the night for the Bulldogs came on their possession as they started at their own 27-yard line following the opening kick-off. Four running plays covered the entire distance with Kenneth Kimbrough capping the drive with a 13-yard sprint. Tyler Walker tossed the 2-point conversion pass to Dwayne Owens and CCHS led 8-0 with 10:53 to go in the first. Calhoun actually put forth a strong effort on the ensuing possession and scored an apparent 70-yard TD pass and catch, but the play was nullified when the QB was flagged for being beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball. Facing a fourth-and-12 Calhoun tried a fake punt from their own 28. The runner came up 2-yards short and the CCHS offense took over at the 38-yard line. Kimbrough ended the short drive two plays later when he scored on a 25-yard gallop. The try for two came up short but the Bulldogs led 14-0 with 8:26 left in the first. The next Clarke County scoring drive started at midfield and on the first play Tim Barnett sprang free for the apparent score, but a penalty negated the play. Instead the Bulldogs would have to wait four more plays before Barnett scored on a 26-yard run. Again the conversion failed but the Bulldogs had a 20-0 lead with 3:54 to go in the period. Calhoun fumbled the ball on the next play and CCHS' Jerome Ivory recovered the ball at the Tiger 17-yard line. Tyler Walker tossed a short 3- yard touchdown pass to Kimbrough to cap the drive. Walker then found Owens for the 2-point conversion and CCHS led 28-0 with :42 left in the opening stanza. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the second quarter as they scored their next touchdown on a 67-yard run by Barnett. Marquentrell Lambert added the PAT and Clarke County had a 35- 0 stranglehold with 10:07 left in the half. The defense provided the next points as Lambert sacked the Calhoun ball carrier in the endzone for a safety. The play made the score 37-0. Calhoun was forced to kickoff following the play and Kimbrough gathered in the kick at his own 40-yard line and raced 60-yards for the Clarke County touchdown. The kick failed but CCHS increased their lead to 43-0 with 9:05 left in the second quarter. Clarke County's defense set the table for the next score as Clay Weaver intercepted the Calhoun pass near mid-field and returned it to the Tiger 45-yard line. Britt Chapman found daylight and broke free for a 20-yard score in the closing minute. The kick failed as the Bulldogs took a 49-0 lead into the locker room at the half. The clock ran freely in the second half and in the fourth quarter Clarke County had their only punt of the game. Owens boomed a 46-yard kick that the Calhoun runner muffed. Terrance Ivory fell on the loose ball at the Tiger 16-yard line. CCHS' Torri Taite scored an apparent 14-yard TD, but it was called back because of a penalty. On the next play Taite again sprang free, this time scoring on a 20-yard run. The attempt was blocked as CCHS ran away with the win 55-0. Barnett led all rushers with 145 yards on eight carries and two scores. Kimbrough had 80 yards on four carries and two TDs. Chapman had 67 yards on five carries with a TD. Taite had 44 yards on five carries including a touchdown. Walker was 5-of-6 passing for 30 yards, all in the first quarter, and had a TD pass. The Bulldog defense held the Tigers to just 43 yards of total offense and five first downs. Clarke County (2-0, 1-0), ranked seventh in Class 3A, travels to Mobile this Friday to take on the Leopards of Mobile Christian (0-2, 0-1) in their next region contest.
