'Ol' Red' keeps sniffing 'em out
The home of James Gilbert Haskew at 972 Centerline Road was broken into at approximately 10 a.m. on Sept. 13, according to Fulton Police Chief Larry Hicks. The chief remembered he had seen a vehicle just before he got the call. That vehicle, a red Chevrolet truck, stopped on the railroad track instead of at the stop sign in the center of town, "which gave me probable cause to check it," Hicks said. The driver of the truck was Ronnie Dewayne "Bubba" Walker, 27, a neighbor of Haskew's at 974 Centerline Road. Walker had prior arrests. "He had just got out of jail the day before," the chief said. Hicks discovered a paper bag full of coins in the vehicle. The victim had reported that a big blue water jug containing dimes and nickels had been stolen. During the subsequent investigation, the chief also found that Walker had paid for $5.95 worth of gas in dimes and nickels. Ronnie Nelson then brought Paul Newton's bloodhound Red into the investigation. Red had recently helped apprehend a juvenile burglar on Sept. 5. The dog tracked from the window that had been broken into to the suspect's residence, Hicks said. Red also was able to get a scent from the crime scene to a nearby wooded area where the stolen water jug had been discarded. "The dog did real good again," the chief. Hicks said he appreciated that people with private-owned dogs will come out on their own to help local law enforcement. "It's nice to have one that close."
Approximately $61.44 was recovered. The suspect was cited for the traffic stop, but Hicks is now searching for Walker with a warrant for burglary, third degree.
