Kathryn Tucker Windham to be honored at ASCC Saturday, Sept. 29

Windham
"Alabama, they say, is like one big front porch where folks gather on summer nights to tell tales and to talk with family…The stories they tell are all alike in their Southern blend of exaggeration, humor, pathos, folklore and romanticism. Family history is woven into the stories. And pride. And humor. Always humor." This quote is just one of many expressed by well-known Alabama author Kathryn Tucker Windham in her book Alabama, One Big Front Porch.

Alabama Southern Community College has reprinted this Alabama classic. Out of print for more than 25 years, Kathryn Tucker Windham's Alabama, One Big Front Porch is now available in a new edition published by New South Books.

Alabama Southern Community College will honor Kathryn Tucker Windham, Alabama's Storyteller, on the Thomasville campus of Alabama Southern on Saturday, Sept. 29 with a celebration of the art of story telling and the new edition of the book.

At 10 A.M., grab a rocking chair and join us on the virtual "front porch" for story telling by Kathryn Tucker Windham and friends. During the morning, guests will also have the opportunity to record their own stories in our "Story Booth" for the Clarke County and Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum collections.

At 11 a.m., Windham will be signing copies of her book and tours of the Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum will take place.

At noon, the event will conclude with a "dinner"- not "lunch"- in the middle of the day. Windham has campaigned for decades to preserve the true Southern meaning of dinner and the noon day meal will reflect that.

Windham has also carried the message that real Southern dinners always end with real Southern desserts. In her honor, guests will end their meal with a tempting array of home-made desserts - cakes, pies and cobblers prepared by the best cooks in Thomasville from these clubs: Thomasville Research Club, Extraordinary Women of Color and the Junior Women's Club.

All dinner reservations must be prepaid. Respond promptly, space is limited. Tickets for Dinner are $20 each.

Order a signed copy of Alabama, One Big Front Porch for $30 each (price includes tax and shipping). Checks only, payable to Alabama Southern Community College, attn: Cindy Moye, P.O. Box 2000, Monroeville, AL 36461.
