It ain't easy being an Irish fan these days
Not so for the Golden Domers. So far it has looked like me, you and some guy named Ned could beat the Irish. And that fact has been tough to deal with, especially with the resurgence of the $4 million man Nick Saban and his rolling Crimson Tide. Not so much the team, but some of their fans, the ones who were in hiding during the lean years, but have resurfaced in the past few weeks. These are the same fans who wanted to fire Saban last Saturday night when he kicked the "Phil Gold" (just say it out loud and you will know what I mean) instead of going for it on fourth down late in the game. Some of these fans couldn't find Tuscaloosa on a map and others are weekly regulars... and it is not all fans, just a portion. And we all have those kinds of fans. But my hat is off to the job he has done in getting the playing to perform at the level they are at right now. Eight wins is possible, if not more, this season. Anyway, one of the reasons I have not been too distraught is the fact I have covered high school football in the area for the last 17 years. In that time you take a different perspective to the game. Some of the things that bother normal fans just don't matter to me. I have seen this area have great teams and I have seen times when everyone was looking forward to the basketball season in October. It makes you a realist. You realize that a new crop of people come through every year and every bunch is not as good as the other and that some are better than the first ones. I will not stop wearing my Notre Dame shirts or hats. I will not take the tag off my car nor will I take the sticker off the back window. Things change with time. The Irish will hopefully get better. If not then they will get a new coach and start over. That is the nature of the beast. As far as Auburn goes, I think that youth and a weak offensive line are their woes, much like that in South Bend. Having a quarterback controversy doesn't make it any easier, with the fans wanting the true freshman Kodi Burns to take over for senior Brandon Cox. This past Saturday it looked like they knew what they were talking about, but that does not make it right to boo Cox when he came on the field. There is never a need for a home team to boo their own players. One solace is the strength of our area high school teams. We have some who have legitimate shots at making championship runs. If we didn't have to play each other there is no telling just how good we could be. The pounding each gets comes when they take the field against another area team. Sadly we are already knee deep into the season, but each and every week there is at least one marquee match-up somewhere close to go and watch. A good football game on Friday night will make a bad Saturday disappear. Trust me I have three weeks worth to prove that fact. Already the defending state champs in Leroy and Sweet Water have run the table thus far and one this is for certain, at least one will not finish the season unbeaten. That's because they meet in two weeks at Nolan Atkins Stadium. That game will be an early sellout. But as coaches say, "I have a game this week and I will worry with that one when it comes around on the schedule."
See you at the games.
