Grant funds crime database Gov. Bob Riley has awarded two grants totaling $150,000 to the Mobile County Commission to support a project to collect, analyze and map crime data to help law enforcement agencies across southwest Alabama reduce crime. The grant will enable the continued operation of the South Alabama Crime Analysis and Mapping Project. Information is shared with law enforcement agencies in Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Dallas, Escambia, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe, Perry, Washington and Wilcox counties. "By collecting and mapping data, this project can help fight crime by pinpointing high-crime areas and detecting trends in criminal activity," Riley said. "This grant will ensure the commendable work of the project continues to keep law enforcement officials on top of the flow of illegal drugs and other criminal activity." The project collects data for property crimes, drug trafficking and domestic violence in the 12- county area to help police officers and sheriff's deputies fight crime. Officers with access to crimemapping software will be able to access crime data and maps from their patrol car computers. The project also creates and distributes crime-trend reports and bulletins. Riley awarded the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will administer the awards.
Riley informed Steve Nodine, president of the County Commission, that the grants had been approved. Matching funds of $15,000 will supplement the award.
