Escaped Washington County work release inmate caught in Whatley Monday afternoon A Washington County inmate who escaped while on work release Monday was captured at Garrick's Store in Whatley a few hours later. "We have some non-violent inmates picking up paper along the road. This one went about two miles away from where they were picking up trash and got a vehicle," Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer said. Jimmy Charles Wilkerson Jr. told Clarke County sheriff's deputies he had originally walked to the creek to use the restroom "and then temptation overtook me and I wanted to go see my old lady." Wilkerson made his way to the home of his sister, Sandra Powell and said she gave him her truck and $20 and told him to leave the state. "He went south, through Mount Vernon, Creola, then to Evergreen and then they caught him in Whatley. He stopped in Mount Vernon to make a phone call and we had been tracking him since then," Sheriff Stringer said. Clarke County Sheriff's Department transport officer Ronnie Randall saw Wilkerson at Garricks Store in Whatley and stopped him. Several deputies went to the scene and Wilkerson was apprehended. He told deputies he was on his way back to the Washington County Sheriff's Department. Powell was charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive. Wilkerson was charged with escape.
"We do not have violent criminals out on work release and this won't stop us from having inmates clean the roads. He was on the loose about four-and-ahalf hours and we were tracking him," Sheriff Stringer added.
