Letter to the Editor
U.S. soldiers deserve a little more respect

Dear Editor,

I have a grandson who has just graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. He graduated with top honors and awards. Anyone who is, or has been, in the military knows what he has accomplished. We are so proud of him! He will be stationed at another base for special training and then be deployed to Iraq. You must know of the pride and the fear we have for him.

Sunday, Sept. 23 he was invited to a class graduation party by one of his classmates. He had not graduated with his class because he decided to finish his schooling early to join the army. He went to school with this class for nine years. It was his class and he was invited. He wanted to go and see his classmates and friends.

One of the parents there asked him to leave because he had not graduated with the class. Lady, who do you think you are? Where is your compassion for our soldiers who are risking their lives for you?

Please, everyone, support our soldiers. That's the least we can do for them, that and our prayers.

To the person who asked him to leave the party, you should be so ashamed of yourself. Not for just making him feel bad but for your disrespect of our U.S. Army boys.

Betty Gates Whatley, Ala.
