SWHS plows through Linden
Linden was able to take the opening possession and drive down the field against the Bulldogs as quarterback Jermaine Black hit Sean Richardson for completions of 16- and 32-yards to move the ball into scoring position. Black and Richardson capped the drive with a 4-yard flip. Black hit Gary Williams with the 2-point conversion pass to give the Patriots an 8-0 lead with 8:30 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs took the ensuing possession and drove through the heart of the Linden defense and Johnny Lockett finished off the drive with a 28-yard sprint. The try for two came up short and Linden held an 8-6 lead with 4:13 to go in the first. The Patriot offense gave the ball back on an interception and the SWHS offense took over near midfield. Behind the running of Lockett, Anthony Landrum and Butch Williams, the Bulldogs moved to paydirt. Lockett broke free for a 15- yard scoring run. QB Drew Luker powered in for the 2- point conversion to give SWHS a 14-8 lead with 1:32 left in the period. Early in the second quarter the Bulldogs added to the lead when Landrum scored on an 11-yard run. Scottie Nelson kicked the PAT, making it 21-8. The Patriots put together a decent drive down to the Bulldog 14-yard line before a penalty backed them up and they turned it over on downs. Luker tossed a perfectly executed screen pass to Nelson to cap the ensuing drive and Nelson booted the PAT, making it 28-8 with 1:03 left before halftime. One final SWHS first half drive ended with an interception in the endzone, but in the second half the Bulldogs ran away with the region win as they scored 28-unanswered points. Landrum scored on runs of 38- and 1-yards, while Lockett scored on a 36-yard run. Chris Landrum closed out the scoring with a 3-yard run, making the final score 56-8.
