Litter Awareness campaign in Coffeeville

The 2007 Fall Litter- Awareness Campaign drew to a close this weekend. Rita Wilson, Co-Chairman for this event in Clarke County, says litter education was emphasized in the school, the churches and to the citizens of Coffeeville. Ms. Wilson and the Coffeeville Beautification Club have used the week-long crusade to stress how simple it is to Keep Alabama Beautiful. The lesson being, it is not a job for one, it is the responsibility of everyone.

The Coffeeville Beautification Club held its' annual road block on Highway 69 at River Street (by Greer's) and gave litter bags with gifts and literature to all who drove through town on Saturday morning. The GoCo was another location for the giveaway. While handing out bags hunters, visitors and townspeople were requested to secure their litter in their autos. A great deal of litter is distributed by mistake, blowing off the back of trucks. Folks were asked to keep a watchful eye for those who litter and to remind people tickets are being issued for littering now. Smokers were asked to keep their cigarette butts in their cars, as they pose a two-fold problem. They are not biodegradable and they are a fire hazard. Hunters were reminded, that during this planting season (for food plots), seed bags, for the most part, also are not biodegradable and need to be disposed of properly.

While this issue is serious, there were opportunities to smile. As seen in the photos, no means of transportation was exempt from the roadblock, and even the County Police were stopped.

There were many involved with all aspects of the roadblock/ giveaway. For the support of PALS (People Against a Littered State), the Coffeeville Beautification Club and all the donations for the gift bags there is much appreciation. We also thank all the citizens for doing their part to keep Clarke County litter-free and Alabama Beautiful.

Please report litter or those who litter to 251-275-1091.
