Coffeeville Town Council votes against pay increase for itself
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Coffeeville Town Council Tuesday voted against pay increases for the mayor and council members. The pay increase would have been in effect after next year's municipal election.

When the issue was brought up, council member Pearlie S. Bell asked Mayor Faye Cotten if the town could afford the raises. "I know we're tight on the budget," the mayor said. "Lately we've been squeezing from month-tomonth. But, if that's what you want, we'll work towards making it work." The decision had to be made before February 2008.

In other action from the Tuesday council meeting, the following town employees were renewed for another year: Timothy Hodge, maintenance worker; Tina May, Town Clerk/Court Clerk Magistrate; and Clint Harrell, Police Chief.

The decision on Betty Autry, Nutrition Center Manager, was postponed until Nov. 1. Mayor Faye Cotten expressed concern about Autry's supervision of the center. "It's not kept up like it's supposed to be," she said.

The mayor will write Autry a letter expressing concern over the condition of the center. Autry has until Nov. 1 "to prove that she wants the job," Bell said in her motion.

The center serves approximately 25 seniors with eat-in and delivery meals.

• An application was approved for a $25,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to purchase a new police vehicle. If the town receives the grant, it will have to pay a 10 percent match.

• Temple Huckabee was appointed to the town Water Board.

• The council voted for - then decided to eliminate - a new business license ordinance until more study could be done. The Municipal Business License Reform Act of 2006, passed by the State Legislature, establishes a uniform statewide set of classifications for businesses.

The minimum cost of a business license would be $100, based on gross receipts. The state law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2008. More study is needed on how the new law would affect local fundraisers and yard sales.

• The Fireman's Ball will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Coffeeville High School Auditorium.
