A classic for the ages!
The game was knotted at 14-14 when the extra period began. The Aggies had the ball first and it took two plays to hit paydirt when quarterback Ladarius Austin snaked in from 7-yards out for the touchdown. John David Mitchell kicked the PAT to give Jackson a 21-14 lead. The Bulldogs then took over at the 10-yard line for their possession. On the second play Tyler Walker pitched a 10-yard TD pass to running back Bubba Frazier. That score set up the decision to kick the PAT and tie the game or go for the 2-point conversion. Coach Allan Floyd and his staff decided to go for the 2-point conversion. The Bulldogs faked a fullback toss to Kenneth Kimbrough, Walker pulled the ball and flipped the tight end dump pass to the open arms of Justin Robinson, for the game clinching conversion, making it 22-21. "I thought it showed a whole lot of class when one of the Jackson players came back on the field after the game and congratulated me and the team on the call to go for 2-points," Coach Floyd said. "That really meant a whole lot to me personally." The classic was a defensive struggle throughout with Clarke County notching the game's first score when Kimbrough burst through the line and rambled 64-yards. The play capped a 5-play, 99-yard drive. Mark Lambert kicked the PAT to make it 7-0 with :11 seconds left in the first quarter. Neither team threatened again in the first half, but in the third quarter Jackson's offense was able to play keep-away from CCHS as they held the ball for eight minutes in the period. They drove down to the Bulldog 21-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. In the fourth quarter Jackson continued to maintain possession and with 3:00 left in the game when Roderick Washington scored on a 5-yard keeper. Mitchell kicked the PAT to tie the game at 7-7. Clarke County answered right back when Kimbrough broke free for a 23-yard touchdown. Lambert nailed the point-after touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead with 1:29 left to play. Jackson went to their 2-minute offense and marched 85-yards to paydirt when Austin tossed a 22-yard pass to William Taylor for the Aggie touchdown. Mitchell's kick once again tied the score, making it 14-14, setting up the overtime fireworks. "What can you say about the crowd and the way they never left and kept encouraging the team," Floyd said, referring to the fact no one left the stadium until the game's final play. "I take my hat off to our fans and the support they give us." Kimbrough led all rushers with 178 yards on 14 carries and two scores. Walker was 4-of-7 passing for 44 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Frazier had two catches for 28 yards and a TD. For Jackson, Washington had 44 yards on 16 carries and a score and also threw for another 40 yards. Austin was 4-of-6 passing (the two incompletions came on spikes to stop the clock) for 79, all of which came in the final 1:29 of the game. He also rushed the ball two times for 10 yards and a TD. Andrew Ezell added 49 yards on 12 carries. Damien Bracy had one catch for 43 yards. Taylor caught three passes for 35 yards and a score. Corey Besteda caught three passes for 31 yards. The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) will likely move up to number four in the ranking following the win while the Aggies fall to 2-3 on the season, but are 2-1 in region play. Both return to region action this week, CCHS travels to York to play Sumter County while Jackson hosts Escambia County.
Both games start at 7 p.m.
