It was like deja-vu all over again for the Leroy Bears as they lost 35-14 to the Sweet Water Bulldogs in an epic battle between defending state champs and top-ranked teams in Class 2A and 1A last Friday night at Nolan Atkins Stadium in Sweet Water.

In 2006 Sweet Water was able to capitalize on Bear miscues to jump out to a big early lead. The same thing happened this season as they scored 21-first quarter points.

Leroy had the ball early and drove down to the Bulldog 18- yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

Sweet Water started there and in 9-plays marched the gridiron.

Quarterback Drew Luker connected with Antonio Landrum for a 35-yard touchdown to cap the drive. The kick failed but Sweet Water had a 6-0 lead with 5:17 to go in the first quarter.

On the ensuing Leroy possession Butch Williams picked off a pass for the Bulldog defense and returned it 67-yards down to the Bear's 7-yard line.

On the first play SWHS lost 6- yards and on the next play Luker tossed a 13-yard scoring strike to Travis Young. Landrum ran in the 2-point conversion and Sweet Water had a 14-0 lead with 3:07 to play in the period.

The Bulldog defense halted Leroy's offense, forcing a punt. Delano Brewer broke through the line to block the kick and scooped up the loose pigskin, returning 18-yards for the SWHS touchdown. Nelson converted the kick and the Bulldogs led the Bears 21-0 with 1:25 left in the opening period of play.

The Bears came right back as QB Clint Moseley tossed a 16- yard touchdown pass to Patrick Rivers. Paul Gartman kicked the point-after touchdown as Leroy edged closer 21-7 with 10:31 to play before halftime.

Just before time expired in the second quarter Sweet Water completed a 14-point swing. The defense stopped a driving Bear offense at the 15-yard line, the Bulldog offense then drove 85-yards the other way with Anthony Landrum capping the drive with a 2-yard dive.

Nelson kicked the PAT and the Bulldogs took a 28-7 lead into the break.

Sweet Water took the opening drive of the second half and drove 73-yards in 13 plays, while chewing up almost 6:00 minutes of the clock, scoring on Landrum's 3-yard run.

Nelson made the kick and the Bulldogs had a 35-7 stranglehold with 6:17 left in the frame.

Leroy answered when Moseley scored on a 3-yard QB keeper. Gartman kick was good as the Bears ended the game's scoring at 35-14.

Luker led Sweet Water on the ground with 63 yards on eight carries. Anthony Landrum added 54 yards on 21 carries. Johnny Lockett had 37 yards on seven carries.

Luker was 7-of-10 passing for 123 yards and two scores.

Moseley was 19-of-31 passing for 282 yards and a score. Patrick Rivers caught seven passes for 144 yards and a score. Aerik Davis caught six passes for 76 yards.

Anthony Payne had 10 solo stops and two assists for the Bear defense while Trae McIntosh had 10 solo tackles and two sacks for the Bulldog defense.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) will hold onto their top-ranking in Class 1A while the Bears (4-1, 3- 0) will drop in the poll in Class 2A.

This Friday Sweet Water travels to Thomaston to play A.L. Johnson while the Bears return home to play Flomaton.

Both games are region contests and each starts at 7 p.m.
