Tompkins burns note
Tompkins Baptist Church held a special note-burning ceremony Sunday morning, marking the paying off of a $250,000 mortgage on the new fellowship hall. Wilbur Downey, chairman of the building committee, said the church had $200,000 in hand for the new addition and borrowed $250,000. In addition, other funds were raised, some $750,000 or more total, for the addition and furnishings. Pastor Don Newton told the congregation that God gives to us so that we in turn can give and he said the church's success at paying off this note was a perfect example. Newton and Downey burn the note at center in the left photo as other church members and members of the building committee look on. After the morning services Sunday, the congregation adjourned to the new fellowship hall for lunch followed by an afternoon singing.
