Lawmen too often nannies, counselors

Sunday, a county deputy was Those who keep up with this called to a scene of a confrontation between a mother and a daughter. Weapons might be involved.

Several minutes later the deputy reported that the two had had a disagreement over how the daughter's child, the mother's grandchild, should be disciplined.

We hear a lot of such calls....husbands and wives arguing, brothers fighting, farthers and sons going at it. The list of family disputes and confrontations go on and on. Law enforcement officers are frequently called to intervene, to play the role of nanny or counselor. kind of thing tell you the incidents are becoming more and more frequent.

The cell phone and 911 are good for real emergencies but we wonder if people don't too quickly call the law when they could and should be settling their own disputes.

That's not to say many of the incidents aren't serious. Statistics also show that lawmen face greater threats in domestic situations than most of us would think.

Still, it is a sad commentary that the law has to be called upon so often to mediate an argument between family members.
