Salute to firefighters

This week is Fire Prevention Week, a time to think about fire safety and to honor firefighters everywhere who work for us.

Here in Clarke County we have 14 volunteer fire departments. Every department in this county is made up of volunteer citizens- people who are willing to drop what they are doing when a siren or their pagers go off. They drive the fire trucks, pull and man hoses and hack through burning walls to save and protect the properties of their neighbors. They show up at wreck scenes to extinguish fires and help free wreck victims.

They get no compensation. They ask for none.

They deserve a hearty round of applause and a big "thank you" not only during this special week but all year round.

We appreciate the work that they do.

Fire Prevention Week is a good time to change the batteries in your home smoke alarms. They shouldn't be just checked but changed to ensure that they are in good working order. And if you don't have smoke alarms in your home, this is a good time to go get some and put them up. They aren't expensive and they could save your life if you have a fire.
