State rural development leaders will attend CDF annual meet The Clarke County Development Foundation's fifth annual meeting will be held in Fulton, Thursday, Oct. 18. Set in the downtown's Sawmill Square, the evening will salute the county's "Log Rollin' Success" with a theme tied to forestry and sawmilling in honor of Fulton's heritage. Scotch Lumber Co.'s whistle will blow at 5:30 p.m. to begin the evening's festivities that will include a "Lumberjack Supper." "Quittin' time" will be 8:30 p.m. The work of the foundation will be highlighted during the evening, including the recent GIS mapping of the entire county, tourism work, anti-litter efforts, Leadership Clarke County classes and activities, countywide wireless Internet service, the new HIPPY program to provide educational help for pre-kindergarten students and parks and recreation. Among those expected to attend are the leaders of two new rural development commissions in the state. Former State Sen. Gerald Dial is the director of the Alabama Rural Action Commission creat- ed by Gov. Bob Riley. Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Ron Sparks oversees the Center for Rural Alabama, funded by the Alabama Legislature. Longtime economic developer Larry Lee is director of the program. All three men are expected to attend. Clarke County citizens are invited to attend the foundation's meeting and are encouraged to become members and supporters of the organization that is working to improve the quality of life and community in the county.
Previous annual meetings have been held in Jackson, Grove Hill, Thomasville and Coffeeville.
