ASCC receives third Bellwether nomination

Alabama Southern Community College has received its third nomination for the National Bellwether Award. This nomination was for the LifeTech Institute, a model training program for parolees conducted in partnership with Governor Bob Riley and the Alabama Department of Pardons and Paroles.

"We are honored to have received another nomination for national excellence," said Dr. John A. Johnson, President of Alabama Southern. "This marks the College's third Bellwether nomination in four years."

The LifeTech Institute for male parolees opened its doors on April 1, 2006 with the purpose of reducing recidivism by helping parolees make the transition from prison to the community after undergoing extensive mental health treatment, substance abuse treatment, vocational training and life skills training.

"Alabama Southern provides the education component of the program as well as statewide job placement services in coordination with business and industry," said Dr. Johnson. "Housing and other components of the parolee transition center are provided by the Alabama Department of Pardons and Paroles. This partnership is designed to reduce prison overcrowding by preparing deserving individuals for job success and life success, thereby also reducing the likelihood that they will return to prison."

"Life Tech provides more than just job training," added Dr. Johnson. "Its life skills components are aimed at changing the way a person looks at life as well as creating skills for personal success."

In 2005, Alabama Southern Community College received the National Bellwether Award for Instructional Excellence presented by the National Community College Futures Assembly and the National Council of Instructional Administrators.

The National Bellwether Award is the most prestigious award recognizing instructional excellence in American community colleges.

The Bellwether Awards annually recognize outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future.

Alabama Southern Community College won the award for their Teaching and Learning Initiative entitled, "Commitment to Student Achievement Through Customized Instruction: A Model for Re-Creating America's Community College."

In 2006, Alabama Southern Community College's Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce was selected as one of the Top 10 Finalists for the 2006 National Bellwether Award for Workforce Development.

The Alabama Southern Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce is an alliance of seven advanced technology manufacturers in six rural counties who have committed scholarships and internships to recruit top students into a pipeline to the region's best jobs. These scholarships and internships are for one of four advanced technology programs depending upon industry needs: (1) Paper and Chemical Technology, (2) Instrumentation and Electronics, (3) Industrial Maintenance and Electrical Technology, and (4) Machine Technology/ Millwright.
