Henley

Nell Porter Henley, 84, of Jackson died Oct. 13, 2007 at a local nursing facility.

She was born April 10, 1923 in Greenville, Miss. She was raised in

Glenn Allan, Miss. She graduated as

valedictorian at

Glenn Allan High School and attended Mississippi State College for Women. During World War II she was a civilian employee of the Army, serving as Department Head in accounting in Daytona Beach, Fla. and at the 4th Service Command in Atlanta, Ga. She taught the Commercial Department at Jackson High School for seven years. She was the favorite teacher among many of her students. She later set up the Commercial Department at the new Jackson Academy and taught there until retirement.

She was a longtime member of the DAR for more than 50 years serving in various positions and also a 50+ year member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was a long time member of the WMU at the First Baptist Church in Jackson where she was a member.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Walter Gaines "Botch" Henley Sr., Jackson; three sons, Walter Gaines "Jack" (Lynn) Henley Jr., Jackson, John Porter (Helen) Henley, Midland, MI, Frank McNair (Mac), (Sandra) Henley, Salitpa; two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert S.J. Porter and Elizabeth McNair Porter.

The service was Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Lathan Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Trinity Memorial Gardens on the Walker Springs Road in Jackson.
