The Clarke County High School Bulldogs used a balance passing and running attack, as well as a smothering defense to turn away the Washington County Bulldogs 46-6 last Friday at H.G. Prim Stadium in Grove Hill.

The win assures Clarke County, at the least, a home playoff spot. They still have two region games remaining that includes a trip to Francis Marion this week and then they host Central-Hayneville in week nine.

Back to the game with Washington County, CCHS had the opening possession and drove 79-yards in 11 plays to hit paydirt.

In the scoring drive quarterback Tyler Walker hit Dwayne Owens with a 40-yard completion and Bubba Frazier with a 22- and 23-yard completions.

Walker called his own number and capped the drive with a 2-yard sneak.

Mark Lambert kicked the PAT and CCHS had a 7-0 lead with 5:45 left in the period.

Washington County, on the ensuing drive saw the potential game-tying pass dropped behind the Clarke County secondary and they were forced to punt.

Starting at midfield, it took CCHS just plays to increase their lead as Walker tossed a 32- yard touchdown pass to Frazier. Lambert again made the PAT and the Bulldogs had a 14-0 lead with 3:56 to play in the first frame.

Clarke County defense, which forced six turnovers, set up on the offense as Ronnie Osborne fell on a fumble at the WCHS 13-yard line.

Kenneth Kimbrough ended the short drive with a 2-yard plunge. The attempt sailed wide right, but the Bulldogs had a 20- 0 lead with just :24 seconds left in the first quarter.

Dwayne Owens ended the next Washington County drive with an interception at the CCHS 22-yard line.

Behind the running of Kimbrough and passing of Walker the Bulldogs marched down the field.

Walker raced 9-yards on a naked bootleg to cap the drive. The try for two came up short but Clarke County had a 26-0 advantage with 6:45 to go in the second quarter.

Following another Chatom punt, CCHS was back in business offensively. Starting at their own 35-yard line, the Bulldogs moved into scoring position.

Tim Barnett got the call and capped the drive with an 8-yard run. Lambert converted the point-after touchdown and CCHS had a 33-0 lead with just 1:39 to play in the half.

The CCHS defense again got in on the act as Kenneth Hannon picked off a tipped pass and returned it 92-yards for the apparent touchdown, but an illegal block penalty brought the score back and the half ended with CCHS on top 33-0.

Washington County was able to capitalize on a CCHS fumble when they got the ball at the 15- yard line.

It took six plays but WCHS QB Drake Warr scored on a 2-yard sneak with 5:29 left in the third quarter. On the conversion attempt Owens stepped in front of the pass, intercepting it. The missed PAT left the score at 33- 6 in favor of CCHS.

Clarke County's offense again went to work on the ensuing possession. They covered 65- yards in five plays with Barnett capping the drive on an 8-yard TD run. The try for two came up short but CCHS had a 39-6 stranglehold.

The homestanding Bulldogs slammed the door shut in the fourth quarter when Barnett outran everyone on the field for a 77-yard touchdown run. Lambert made the PAT and Clarke County ran away with the region win 46-6.

Barnett led all rushers with 128 yards on seven carries and three scores. Ironically he had eight yards on four carries in the first half.

Kimbrough added 106 yards on 12 carries and a TD.

Walker was 12-of-15 passing for 208 yards and a score. He also ran for two scores.

Bubba Frazier caught eight passes for 121 yards and a score.

Defensively the Bulldogs forced six WCHS turnovers. Owens had a pair of interceptions. Hannon and Daniel Bedwell each had an interception.

Leevon Davis and Ronnie Osborne each had a fumble recovery.

This Friday the fourth-ranked Bulldogs (7-0, 5-0) take to the road as they face Francis Marion in a region contest.

Game time is 7 p.m.
