Alabama producers celebrate Beef Month
The beef cattle industry is one of the state's largest industries, representing 23,000 cattle farms and a $3 billion industry. Alabama has more than 1,320,000 head of cattle and calves on Alabama farms and ranks 9th in the United States among all states in number of farms with beef cows during 2006. The cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves in 2006 reached $469 million. "I am a cattle producer and I enjoy serving delicious and nutritious beef meals to my family," states Max Bozeman, Alabama Cattlemen's Association president. "Join me in celebrating October Beef Month by serving delicious beef meals to your family," Bozeman added. Cattle producers and consumers have a reason to celebrate October Beef Month. The USDA recently announced new data that shows there are 29 cuts of beef that meet government guidelines for lean. USDA's definition of lean means cuts containing less than 10 grams of total fat, 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat and less than 94 milligrams of cholesterol per 3-ounce serving. The list of lean beef cuts includes many traditional favorites like tenderloin and T-bone plus new cuts available as a result of the beef checkoff-funded muscleprofiling project, including the Western Griller and Ranch Steaks. The beef checkoff program partners with USDA to fund the analysis of beef cuts to be sure the beef nutrient data remains upto date and accurate. Beef producers are committed to raising a wholesome product for their families and consumers. Also, in responding to the needs of today's consumers, major manufacturers have developed a variety of "heat and serve" beef products. These beef dishes are fully cooked and ready to serve in ten minutes from your microwave. The latest convenient "heat and serve" beef products come in an assortment of beef cuts such as the beef pot roast, beef tips with gravy, grilled and seasoned beef steak strips, meatballs, hamburgers and more. Today, consumers can look for the convenient "heat and serve" beef products in the fresh meat case and frozen section of your local Alabama Supermarkets.
