AG King honors local lawmen

Jackson Policemen Carey Slayton, Barry Fowler, Alabama Attorney General Troy King and State Trooper Darrell Linder at awards ceremony in Montgomery Tuesday.
Two officers from the Jackson Police Department and an area State Trooper were honored Tuesday at the Attorney General's 2007 Law Enforcement Summit in Montgomery for their efforts in helping to save two toddlers found in a swimming pool earlier this year.

The Southern District Award for "Outstanding Law Enforcement Officers of the Year" was jointly awarded to Officers Barry Fowler and Carey Slayton of the Jackson Police Department and Trooper Darrell Linder of the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Each honoree received a gift certificate for one of the Retirement System of Alabama resorts and a framed Certificate of Merit from Attorney General Troy King.

King described the events of March 8 and how the three lawmen responded to a call from Nancy's Daycare near Jackson.

The three "heard the emergency dispatch, responded to the call regarding a child found unconscious and floating in a swimming pool. Trooper Linder was the first officer on the scene. He found a one-and-a-half year old child unconscious and without a pulse.

Trooper Linder performed CPR until a slight pulse was obtained. Officer Fowler and Officer Slayton arrived and noticed that another child was in the swimming pool, face-down and unconscious. This child was also removed from the pool with no pulse. Officer Fowler and Officer Slayton initiated and continued CPR until they were relieved by Jets Ambulance Service and the Jackson Fire Department Personnel. In responding to this call, in taking charge of the situation, and in tirelessly performing life-saving services on two small children, Officer Fowler, Officer Slayton, and Trooper Linder saved these children's lives. This is a tremendous personal and professional accomplishment deserving the highest commendation of the Office of the Attorney General. Officer Barry Fowler, Officer Carey Slayton, and Trooper Darrell Linder's sustained superior performance, coupled with their devotion to duty, is in keeping with the highest traditions of public service, and reflects great credit upon these Law Enforcement Officers, their families, respective agencies, and the State of Alabama."

The children are John Thomas Atchison and Cole Hicks.

Approximately 570 law enforcement professionals received specialized training at Tuesday's summit to deal with school violence issues.

King also honored five fallen law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty during the last year, presenting family members with Certificates of Valor.
