College season a sure sign of the apocalpyse
Sports Scene
Ross Wood Sports Editor

It seems as though there are still NASCAR races and baseball is still being played. Ironically I thought all of that had ended when the first football was placed on a tee and then kicked to an opposing team.

It seems as though NASCAR attempted to go head-to-head with college football this past Saturday night. I think there were 20 people who turned the channel from the Kentucky- LSU or Auburn-Arkansas game to watch 43 men keep making left turns.

Even fewer watched the baseball game between Colorado and Arizona….like anyone really cares who will be representing the National League in the World Series. Although it was interesting to see that the Colorado franchise keeps the baseballs for all home games in a humidor to cut back on all the home runs usually hit in Coors Field.

Anyway this may go down as the craziest college football season we have seen in a millennium.

Think about it. The top ranked teams keeps getting beat by someone who shouldn't even be on the same field.

Case in point. USC lost to Stanford two weeks ago and then just this past week LSU fell to Kentucky (no it was not a college basketball game). Earlier in the season Michigan lost to Division II Appalachian State.

Throw in other upsets and what not and now you have South Florida sitting at number two in the BCS standings. That means if the season ended tomorrow they would be playing Ohio State for the national championship. Even USC, who everyone said had the best college football team in history has fallen to number 14 in the BCS standings. It may take a minor miracle to get in position to play for a title now.

Alabama came out looking like they were ready to beat the world in their first few games. Then I started looking for Mike Shula on the sidelines instead of the $4 million man Nick Saban. Because they really started looking like the team of old.

Auburn lost two in a row, even though one was to the aforementioned South Florida and everyone was ready to close the book on the season. Then they go to Gainesville and beat defending national champ, Florida.

I am telling you it has been a crazy season. I mean crazy.

I knew Notre Dame was gonna be down, but I thought they would have at least two or three wins by now. Instead my Irish may be lucky to end the year with three wins.

I would say it was a sure sign of the apocalypse, but I guess it is just parity in the college ranks.

It should be very interesting in the coming weeks to see which teams don't want to be ranked in the top five, because no one has enjoyed more than a week or so in those lofty areas.

Maybe that is why it is the greatest game in the land. You just never know what you are going to see or who is going to win. Hoops gets started

Speaking of different sports. Can you believe that high school basketball has started in the state.

Teams took to the courts Monday in preparation for the upcoming season. The first games are in less than a month.

Talk about overlaping seasons, with the success of our football programs, it may be December before some of the area hoops are at full strength.

Then the area will be able to flex their muscles in that sport, proving just how strong we are in every venue.

Take the time to check out your favorite team as the season wears down.

That's all folks........
