It was the first game since coach Andrew Varner of the Southern Choctaw High Indians had resigned. After that shock, the team and interim head coach Charles Chaney had to prepare for a visit from the Leroy High Bears.

However, the Indians didn't find an answer for the Leroy offense as the Bears got into a confident rhythm and dominated SCHS 39-6 on Oct. 12 at the Gilbertown "Reservation."

The Bears got the ball first with Jarrette Davis running the kickoff to the Leroy 42-yard line. A pass from quarterback Clint Moseley to Victor Lovick gained seven yards. A penalty on the Indians brought Leroy into SCHS territory, and Moseley ran to the Indian 38.

After penalties on both teams, the Bears still had the ball on the 38, and Moseley hit Patrick Rivers for a touchdown pass with 9:05 left in the first quarter. The point-after kick by Paul Gartman was also good, and Leroy led by 7.

The first drive by SCHS was three downs-and-a punt so the Bears had the ball to begin a long drive on their own 21. Moseley passed to Lovick for 13 yards. Two plays later, a pass to Aerik Davis gained six more yards.

Lovick ran to the Leroy 47, and Moseley passed to Rivers to reach the Indian 41. Detrick Powell gained seven yards, but an illegal shift penalty on Leroy moved the ball back to the SCHS 46. A pass to Rivers reached the Indian 37. Runs by Moseley and Powell moved the ball down to the 27.

Despite a delay-of-game penalty on Leroy, a pass to Rivers brought the Bears to the 19. Moseley gained one yard, and then threw to Rivers for the TD with 2:02 left in the first quarter.

A two-point conversion pass was no good, and the Bears led by 12.

The next Indian drive would end after four plays when a lateral from QB Jamison Stewart was recovered by Rivers, and he ran to the SCHS 30 as the second quarter began. Four plays later, however, the Bears turned the ball over-on-downs at the Indian 27.

The Indians couldn't make much progress, and after a holding penalty and two incomplete passes, SCHS had to punt.

Leroy had the ball on the 50-yard line. The Bears running game began to chew up yardage. Moseley, Powell and Michael Bracy all got in on the action. The drive ended with a one-yard TD run by Moseley.

The point-after kick by Gartman was good, and with 2:41 left in the first half, Leroy led 19-0.

Leroy's Clent Collins made a great special teams tackle on Joe Lewis, and the Indians began on their own 21. The Bears defense gave little ground, and SCHS was again three downs-and-punt.

Leroy had the ball on the Indian 32. It took just one pass, from Moseley to Stephen Scoggins, to score again.

The point-after kick was again good, and with 1:09 left in the first half, the Leroy lead increased to 26- 0.

Time ran out on the next SCHS drive in the first half. The Indians got the ball first in the third quarter but gave up the ball after three plays. A bad punt gave Leroy the ball on the SCHS 35.

Once again, Leroy only needed one play to score - Bracy broke several tackles for the touchdown with 9:43 left in the third quarter. The point-after kick was good, and Leroy led by 33.

The Bears defense continued to close down the Indian offense. After only three plays, SCHS punted, and Leroy had the ball on the SCHS 47. The Black Bears were not through yet. Bracy gained seven yards, and Moseley passed to Phillip Ervin to reach the nine-yard line.

Aerik Davis gained five yards, and also passed to Powell to reach the one-yard line. Aerik Davis would score the TD from there with five minutes left in the third quarter. The point-after kick was no good, and Leroy led 39-0.

The Indians would reach midfield on their next drive but were forced to punt.

Leroy began their next drive from poor position, their own 10. As the game moved into the fourth quarter, the Bears moved to midfield but had to punt.

On the runback Jerome Taylor made a great play on the Indians' Cornelius Lewis keeping him from reaching any farther than the SCHS 34. However, the only successful SCHS drive began as Gregory Turner gained four hard yards, Rex Philon gained two more, and Turner added six more.

A pass interference call on Leroy moved the ball to the Bear 39. Runs by Philon and Turner moved SCHS to the Leroy 33.

An Indian pass was intercepted by Ervin, but another pass interference flag on Leroy erased that. SCHS had the ball on the Leroy 18. Turner gained three yards, and Rasharid Boman gained four more.

Turner finished off the drive with a TD from the four-yard line with 3:45 left in the game. The pointafter kick was no good, and the score was Leroy 39-SCHS 6.

After a squib kick by the Indians, Leroy had the ball, beginning on their own 33, and they ran the remaining time off the clock.

Leroy was 11 of 17 in passing for 186 yards with no interceptions. (Moseley was 10 for 15 in passing and 155 yards. He threw three touchdowns and ran for one TD.)

Total yards were 419 for Leroy and 73 for SCHS.

Leroy will host the Bayside Academy Admirals Friday for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
