Quilts salute soldiers
Marie Slade displays a "Home of the Brave" quilt that she and Ramona Kelley and members of the Cozy Quilters, a Thomasville quilting club, helped create for the families of those who have given their lives fighting for their country, in Iraq or elsewhere. The Home of the Brave Quilt Project commemorates Civil War quilts like those fashioned during the Civil War that are given to families. The quilts feature a space on each block for someone, whether or not they knew the fallen soldier, to sign their name. The project has become a national one with quilt chapters in almost all of the 50 states. Slade said the local quilt club meets the first and third Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the Thomasville Nutrition Center. There are about 25 quilters but more are welcomed to attend and help with this important project.
