"Ground has been broken and the foundation is being poured for the new building which is to house the prisoners and the employees of the local Convict Camp. The building is to be a two-story structure of concrete blocks and will tie in with the old administration building of the Sixth Division Highway Department which was vacated when the highway office was moved to its present location...T. J. Gibson is superintendent of the camp."

C. C. Pittard, vice president and general manager of the First Bank of Grove Hill, announced that the bank would pay a higher rate on savings accounts, two percent, effective Jan. 1, 1954.

An ad from the Southwest Alabama Gas District, a Clarke County corporation, said "Natural gas may come to Grove Hill if you want it" and detailed how the gas would be available and the background of the corporation that was described as being owned by Jackson, Grove Hill and Thomasville. This was the beginning of today's Clarke-Mobile Gas District.

The Clarke County High School Bulldogs defeated Sweet Water 20-0 in Grove Hill the previous Friday night. Bulldog players included David Mathews and Charlie Helms at ends, Jerome Bradford and Clyd Hare at tackles, John Chancey and Sam Dumas at guards and Will Dunn Jr. at center. Paul Waite was the quarterback and Alton Bradford and Reg Cooper were halfbacks with Jimmy Ricketts at fullback. Others playing included Howard Nichols, Cecil Gibbs, Dick Williamson, Tommy Coleman and Morris Dyess. The captain for the Sweet Water team was Bill Hamilton, "husky fullback." The CCHS team stopped him for the first time this season, the report stated.
