Highway 84 collision fatal for three
According to Dorris Teague, information specialist with the Alabama Department of Public Safety, a passenger car and a tractor trailer rig collided in what was described as "an angular head-on" collision. The wreck occurred at approximately 4:12 p.m. at the 28.31-mile marker of Highway 84, four miles east of Coffeeville. The victims came from the passenger car, a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis, and included the driver Danny E. Balch, 66, of Mannsville, N.Y. and passengers, Bernard Ross Balch, 76, and Armie Butler Balch, 73, both of Haughton, La. The truck did not overturn. The truck driver, James Daniel Bradley of St. Augustine, Fla., was not injured. The Balch vehicle was headed east and the truck was going west. Some witnesses said the Balch car ran off its side of the road, striking a deep rut and when Danny Balch pulled back onto the highway, the car crossed into the path of the oncoming truck. Highway 84 was closed for approximately six hours due to considerable debris and diesel gasoline on the road, said County Emergency Management Agency Director Roy Waite. Several agencies responded to the accident including EMA, State Troopers, District Attonrey's office, the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Clarke County Sheriff's Department, and the Coffeeville, Salitpa and West Bend Volunteer Fire Departments. Danny Balch was the brother of Bernard Balch. Bernard and Armie Balch were the parents of Mel Balch, Mobile Press-Register production manager, who was quoted in the newspaper as saying his parents and uncle were coming to visit him. "They were coming down to spend a week in the country, fishing and tinkering around." Also, there was another accident on Oct. 18 involving one vehicle at the 41-mile marker of Highway 69.
George Wade Downey, 55, was driving his 1995 Ford when he lost control. The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m., Teague said. He was injured, but no other information was available from State Troopers.
