Gators clinch region title with win
The Gator win, paired with Fort Dale's 47-21 win over Cottage Hill gave Clarke Prep it's first region title in the AISA's largest classification. Against the Colts, Clarke Prep scored on their first four offensive possessions. Two of those possessions came courtesy of the defense producing a turnover. Following a Colt punt the Gator offense started their first possession at the 40-yard line. It took just six plays to cover the 60-yards to paydirt, with Brett Bradford capping it on a 15-yard sprint. Hunter Mayton kicked the PAT and Clarke Prep had a 7-0 lead with 6:54 left in the period. Chad Dickinson intercepted Hayden Kelly's pass on the third play of the Hooper possession, giving the ball back to the Gators at the CPS 47-yard line. Dickinson was on the receiving end of a J.D. Powell pass that covered 36-yards, setting up Taylor Becton's 11-yard jaunt. The try for two failed, but Clarke Prep had a 13-0 lead with 3:59 left in the first stanza. Once again Clarke Prep's defense came up with a big play as Powell picked off Kelly's pass and returned it 7-yards, to the Gator 23-yard line. Bradford sprinted 31-yards, pushing the ball past midfield. Two plays later Powell connected with Dickinson for a 34-yard TD pass and catch. Bradford ran in the 2-point conversion and the Gators had a 21-0 stranglehold with :32 left in the period. CPS took possession early in the second quarter and, aided by a pair of Colt penalties, moved towards the Hooper goaline. Facing third-and-six, from 9-yards out, Powell flipped a pass to Tanner Tucker who took the pigskin across the plane. Mayton converted the pointafter touchdown, making it 28-0 with 8:13 left before halftime. Facing a defense full of substitutes, the Colts finally put together their first real threat of the game. They marched 60- yards in 14 plays, from a spread offensive formation, and scored when Kelly dove in from 1-yard out. Steven Pugh blocked the conversion attempt, but the Colts were on the scoreboard 28-6 as the first half came to a close. Dickinson intercepted his second pass of the game to give the Gators the ball at the Hooper 27-yard line. It took just four plays for Clarke Prep to score as Bradford powered in from 5-yards out for the score. Bradford also ran for the 2-point conversion, pushing the lead to 36-6 with 5:20 left in the third period. Morgan Faulkner ended the game's scoring when he found the endzone from 6-yards out for Hooper. The try for two was no good and Clarke Prep ran away with a 36-12 region win. Bradford led all rushers with 122 yards on 13 carries and two scores. Becton added 114 yards on 14 carries and a TD. Randy Nichols had 63 yards on four carries. Powell was 9-of-12 passing for 133 yards and two scores. Dickinson caught four passes for 92 yards and a score. Tucker had three catches for 43 yards and a TD. The win gives the Gators a 6-1 record in region play and also assures them of home-field advantage throughout the first two rounds of the playoffs. They will get to host the Patriots of Pike Liberal Arts in the first round of the state playoffs. But before that, they must close out the regular season with their annual clash against county-foe Jackson. The Eagles lost 52-6 last Friday at Marengo Academy.
Game time in Jackson is 7 p.m.
